A freestanding tent can hold itself up without stakes or guy-out points and can be fast-pitched. They can be moved without losing their shape or collapsing. A semi-freestanding tent may have guy-out points that need to be staked down for the tent to fully hold its shape and cannot be fast pitched. These tents are typically designed to be lighter in weight for ultralight or thru-hikers.

Who doesn't love a good visual comparison?
Below are the Hornet OSMO, a semi-freestanding tent, and the Dragonfly OSMO, a freestanding tent. Note that the front of the Hornet is held up by a yellow guyline, while the Dragonfly's pole set goes down to each corner and connects to the rainfly without the need for a guyline.
